Since his first trip in 1972, Harry Gruyaert has continuously returned to Morocco, seeking to recapture the initial shock he felt: a splendid harmony between forms, colors, the everyday gestures of people, and nature. From the High Atlas to the desert, from the countryside to Marrakech, Fez, Essaouira, or Erfoud, Harry Gruyaert's images create imaginary theaters that express the enchantment this country has exerted on him for over 50 years. Yet, paradoxically, his photographs are also very physical.
"Taking a photo is both seeking contact and refusing it, being the most present and the least present at the same time. On the field, it’s a real 'struggle' with reality, a kind of trance to capture an image or perhaps miss everything. It's in this struggle that I find myself the best." -Harry Gruyaert
Morocco is the expression of this particular tension, halfway between exhilaration and enchantment.
