Erika Cotteleer: Probably this is the Truth

 Erika Cotteleer paints and draws women whose absurd actions form a language that does not seek to please, but to unsettle. From a feminist perspective, she explores how the image of the female body has been distorted by social, male and comparative gazes, completely warped by decades of judgement and comparison.

It is a resistance to the gaze that seeks to tame women, a refusal to smooth over or hide their ageing bodies. She records encounters and rituals of liberation in which they consciously and fully participate. They advocate for their bodies, their mental state and their sexuality. By presenting herself in a variety of guises, Cotteleer questions not only the representation of femininity, but also the social expectations imposed upon it.
