William Klein - Belgium

Gallery FIFTY ONE TOO is proud to present the tribute exhibition “Belgium”, showing visionary photographer William Klein’s striking vision on Belgium throughout the second half of the 20th century.

William Klein’s connection to Belgium was both personal and artistic, anchored by his marriage to Belgian artist Jeanne Florin and their residence in Knokke. The tranquil coastal town offered him a retreat from the bustle of Paris and New York, providing a space for creative introspection. To Klein Belgium was his place of refuge.

Klein’s frequent visits to Belgium influenced his approach to photography, merging the quietude of rural life with the dynamic, gritty urbanism he was known for capturing in bigger cities. The blend of personal attachment and professional recognition in Belgium played a key role in shaping Klein’s distinctive, raw aesthetic.
Resulting in an exceptional selection of photographs, showcasing Klein’s experience in Belgium.
